Breville Express
Espresso Machine
Daria Yelenets
Barista Express is a realistic 3D kitchen hero prop study focused on hard-surface modeling, high-fidelity texture creation, and subtle environmental storytelling. Developed to demonstrate advanced texturing techniques, the project features custom textures authored in Photoshop, bump and normal maps for embossed branding and fine surface wear, alpha channels for precise interface decals, and multi-material shading across brushed metal, chrome, matte rubber, and dried milk residue.

The brief
Concept & Art Direction
Designed as a hero prop for a contemporary domestic or cafe environment, the asset depicts a modern stainless steel espresso machine showing authentic signs of frequent use. Rather than presenting a pristine showroom model, the design emphasizes real-world storytelling: mineral water spots on the backplate, dried milk residue on the steam wand tip, micro-scratches along the portafilter collar, and coffee splatter across the drip tray.
Production
Hard-Surface Modeling, Texturing & Shader Pipeline
- Mesh Construction: Modeled the sheet-metal chassis, drip tray, and mechanical hardware (portafilter, group head, pressure gauge, steam wand) with clean edge flow and optimized topology.
- Photoshop Texturing: Authored albedo maps in Photoshop, capturing anisotropic brushed metal grain, coffee splatters, water spots, and dried milk residue.
- Bump & Normal Mapping: Generated high-frequency relief to define the stamped "Breville" logo, dial markings, panel seams, and hairline abrasions.
- Alpha Channel Masking: Leveraged alpha channels for interface iconography, control labels ("Clean / Descale", "Hot Water / Steam"), and drainage grille cutouts.
- Material Shading: Calibrated contrasting surface responses across chrome bezels, brushed stainless steel, matte rubberized grips, and cloudy residue.
